$450 Detention Exposure Found


The money looked fine.

At first glance, most carriers would have booked this load and moved on.

The rate wasn't terrible. The miles made sense. The truck would have moved.

But the paperwork told a different story.

Buried in the rate confirmation was detention language that left compensation dependent on somebody else's decision after the truck was already sitting.

That's a problem.

A truck doesn't stop costing money because it stops moving.

The fuel bill doesn't stop.

The truck payment doesn't stop.

Insurance doesn't stop.

The driver's time doesn't stop.

But according to this language, getting paid might.

This clause left the carrier sitting on the dock while somebody else decided whether detention should be approved after the fact.

That's not a position we're willing to put a truck in.

So before dispatch, we pushed back.


What We Told The Broker

This detention clause leaves the truck sitting on the dock while somebody else decides whether the carrier deserves to be paid. We need written confirmation that detention begins after two hours, includes a clearly defined hourly rate, and does not require additional approval after the detention threshold has been met. If the driver has met the requirements for detention, compensation should be automatic, not subject to a second decision after the fact. Before this truck moves, we need that cleaned up in writing.
